Pictures At An Exhibition with the Detroit Symphony
*The event has already taken place on this date: Sun, 11/17/2019
Mussorgsky, blindsided by the sudden passing of his close friend Victor Hartmann, turned his pain into art: he composed a suite of musical paintings for piano, inspired by Hartmann’s sketches. Maurice Ravel later brightened this imagined gallery with the colorful orchestral arrangement most recognizable today. The brassy “Promenade” theme which wanders throughout Mussorgsky’s Exhibition may sound particularly familiar, even to audiences new to Pictures at an Exhibition. Music Director Laureate Leonard Slatkin returns to conduct these concerts, which include the premiere of An Affirming Flame by Arab-American composer Mohammed Fairouz.
