Nankin Mills Interpretive Center  33175 Ann Arbor Trail  Westland, MI  48185

Spend an evening learning about nature close to your home in these naturalist-led programs!

All programs are 7:00-9:00 PM and meet at the Nankin Mills “Nature Barn,” the red barn on the Nankin Mills campus.  The programs have an interactive learning session in the barn followed by an evening hike.  Programs are for ages five and up, the trail is not stroller friendly.

Fee is $5 per person and pre-registration is necessary at https://wayneco.recpro-iframe.com/Default.aspx

Owl Prowl:  Thursday, May 19, 2022

Owls are stealthy animals with their broad, super quiet wings!

Learn about these amazing night creatures, and their many nocturnal adaptations.  Dissect an owl pellet to see bones of animals that an owl ate, and go on an evening hike to look and call for an owl.

Frog Hop:  Thursday, June 16, 2022

Ever see a toad in the soil while working in garden?  What a wondrous looking critter!

Net a frog (and release) in our pond, meet a few frogs up close in the Nature Barn, and drive to a beautiful wetland to look for frogs and hear their calls.

Crickets, Katydids, and Moths:  Thursday, August 18, 2022

Late summer means a chorus of insect calls.  What would a warm summer night be without the gentle sound of chirping crickets filling the air?  Then late in the summer is the “Katy did, she didn’t; she did; she didn’t call” of the katydid.  All together it is a nature symphony!  When it comes to night-time bugs, don’t forget the moths; while beautiful butterflies get all the credit, there are almost ten-fold as many moth species compared to butterflies in the world!  We’ll learn about the night time insects and see if we can catch (and release) some!
