Name of Program: From Baseline to the River: The Abolition and Underground Railroad Movements
In Wayne County, Michigan in the Nineteenth Century
Date and Time: Thursday, February 27, 7:00 PM-8:30 PM
Location: Nankin Mills Interpretive Center
Info about Program: This event explores the rich history and heritage of the Underground Railroad (UGRR) movement in western Wayne County and Downriver. From western Wayne County communities, such as Canton and Nankin (modern-day Westland), Romulus, to the southwest region, we will explore different areas of the county that once served as a refuge for Freedom Seekers who escaped slavery. Downriver communities, such as Trenton, Wyandotte, Grosse Isle, Zug Island, and others, provided safe havens and assisted in transporting enslaved African Americans to Canada. This program will highlight both western Wayne County and the downriver area UGRR networks—a combination of black and white abolitionists—contributions to freedom and emancipation.
We will cancel only in extreme weather conditions. In this case, you will be emailed by 4:00 PM on the day before the program and given credit for a future program.
